Year 5 - Mrs Millane

'Where everybody is somebody'

Fabulous Fox Class

Mrs Avison, Mrs Tyler and I would like to wish you a very warm welcome to Year 5!

We do hope you have all had a wonderful summer break and are ready for an exciting new year! We are looking forward to welcoming you back, so we can start our learning journey, full of curiosity, challenges and celebrations!

Please keep browsing our class page for important updates, resources to support, timetables and most importantly, the children's learning.

We feel that open lines of communication between the parent/ guardian, child and teacher are the key components to promoting a positive educational climate which is conducive to learning. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school to arrange a time, or if you wish, drop me an email:

Looking forward to seeing you all, Mrs Millane.

Homework reminder

Similar to last year, your child will be set homework which links with the learning taking place within the classroom. We encourage you to support your child with the tasks which have been set, alongside listening to your child read at least three times a week.

NB: If your child is struggling with their homework, please ask for help.

Maths

  • Given out on a Friday -  to be handed in the following Wednesday.
  • 10 minutes of TTRockstars each week (this will support your child's learning and overall understanding).

Reading

  • Your child needs to read at least 3 times a week, with their reading record book signed by an adult.
  • Your child’s reading book and records MUST be brought in daily, to monitor reading between home and school. We value any comments made by parents/ guardians in relation to reading.
  • Similar to last year, your child will receive a raffle ticket for the number of times they read to an adult each week (1 raffle ticket every 2 reads). These tickets will then be entered into a raffle, where your child could win a prize!
  • Reading at home, as well as school, is a fantastic way of supporting your child’s learning. Discussing books and providing meaningful reading opportunities outside the classroom can foster a lifelong love of reading.
  • Ask your child about the Hot Chocolate Loyalty Card.

Spellings

  • Spellings and an activity will be given out each Monday, to be returned the following Monday to be tested.
  • The activities are there to help your child understand the meaning of the word.

P.E

  • Monday - Indoor / Wednesday - Outdoor (weather permitted)
  • Your child will need black/ navy shorts, white T-shirt, joggers and a long-sleeved top with plimsolls or trainers.
  • For safety reasons, pierced ears covered, if unable to take out and long hair to be tied back.

Our focus in PE was to block and defend an area. We gained a greater understanding of how to slow down opposition attacks and used this knowledge to score points.

Science - This term we have been studying SPACE! Take a look at our work......we are sure you will be AMAZED!!!! It is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!

Maths - This term, the children have been adding/ subtracting fractions with different denominators. The children have really impressed me, finding the common denominator, changing improper fractions to mixed fractions and visa versa, as well as simplifying. Take a look!

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day is the UK’s biggest celebration of online safety. Each year they cover an online issue or theme that speaks about the things young people are seeing and experiencing online. Created in consultation with young people across the UK, this year Safer Internet Day will be focusing on the issue of scams online and for young people, how to protect themselves and others, as well as what support is available to them.

This Safer Internet Day we will assess the real scale of this issue and allow young people to share their experiences and ideas on how to tackle the problem. We’ll build on the important work being done to raise awareness of issues such as online financial sextortion and we’ll also consider the future of scams, answering questions such as:

  • How is changing technology like generative AI going to impact the approach of scammers?
  • What role can the government and internet industry take to tackle this threat?
  • And what changes would young people like to see to help protect themselves moving forward?

We were fortunate enough to have a visitor carry out an 'Safer Internet Day'. The children thoroughly enjoyed it, taking part in discussions and activities to raise awareness.

The children really enjoyed learning about different religions and traditions. In Religious Education they learnt the importance of the Qur'an and how it guides the Muslim faith..

Our visit to Nene Park, learning about rivers and pond dipping. We had a great day!

National Poetry Day: October 3rd 2024

Aiming to inspire a love of poetry, this event provides a fantastic opportunity to explore and celebrate poetry. From engaging with familiar poems we love, to the creative fulfilment of crafting new works. To celebrate the profound art of poetry, an art form that has the power to inspire, console, and captivate, we are holding a ‘Share a Poem’ to honour poets, their craft, and the way poetry enriches our lives.

We would like to invite your children to research, recall their favourite poem (or nursery rhyme) or even write a poem, to share with their class during the coming weeks.

The children will vote for their favourite, which will then be shared in assembly on Wednesday 2nd October.
