World Book Day

World Book Day is a celebration of stories. The day is marked in over 100 countries across the world. Arts charity Settle Stories are delighted to offer us two free online storytelling performances (one for KS1 and EYFS & one for KS2) to help our pupils have the best World Book Day ever with professional storyteller Alia Alzougbi.

Alia is an award-winning, BAFTA nominated, dynamic storyteller with a breadth of tales from around the world. Having grown up around the Middle East, and coming from a Muslim cultural background, she specialises in stories from the Islamic and Middle Eastern traditions. Alia has performed internationally in theatres, at festivals, and has appeared on BBC Arabic Radio and Television.

The Story being told is – Arabian Nights:

PRINTING

Display the image below and ask the children what they think has been used to print the pattern on the paper. How has the shape of the rabbit been created?

Explain that today the children are going to create a silhouette by using their thumb prints. Demonstrate how to cover a section of the paper with the shape that the want to create and then use their thumb prints to follow the outline of the silhouette and the rest of the page.

Children to choose which silhouette to create and then use their thumbs and chosen colours to cover the page with thumb prints.

When complete remove the shape from their page and reveal the silhouette they have created.

MUSIC

Fill a recycling bin with different wrappers and packaging for children to explore. Use packaging such as cardboard boxes and chocolate wrappers which make interesting sounds when tapped.

Ask the children to select a piece of packaging to make a tapping sound. As children play tapping sounds  using their litter. While a child taps some packaging, others could respond by tapping their knees.

Repeat this activity, asking children to choose a different 'litter soundmaker' to play a tapping sound.

This week we are focussing on the following skills:

Holding on to a wall, try the following:

• Stand on both legs and change height, for example bend your knees, balance on your tiptoes.

• On both legs and then on 1 leg, lean forwards and backwards and from side to side to see when you start to lose balance.

• Stand on 1 leg and count to 10, then change to the other leg.

• Stand on 1 leg and change height, maybe in time to a song or beat.

• Stand on 1 leg and change your shape, for example use your body to form different letters.

• Do all of the above with your eyes closed.

• Play a game of musical statues, freezing on 1 leg when the music stops.

• Work with a partner and take turns balancing on 1 leg. When your partner is balancing, try to make them lose balance without touching them, for example wave or clap.

• Work with a partner and take turns balancing on 1 leg. When your partner is balancing, give them instructions on how to move their body.

Show the children the image below and discuss what item has been used to create the printing effect.

Explain that a kitchen roll tube has been cut up to create a splayed effect and then a selection of rolls dipped in different coloured paint to create a firework effect picture.

Children to cut up kitchen roll tubes and then use them to dip into the different coloured paints to create firework pictures.

Discuss how you can create different effects having kitchen roll tubes cut thinly and thickly and look at the differences.

MUSIC

Using small-world toys as props, talk with children about public service workers and the important jobs they do. Discuss postmen delivering our mail, police officers keeping us safe, road sweepers keeping our streets clean etc.

Children to make up enthusiastic miming actions to represent the busy jobs.

Pretend you’re holding the handle bars of your bike and start at home (a spot). Don’t forget to put on your helmet and look behind you before slowly moving off in 1st gear.

Practise different movements for the different gears:

1st gear – walk or knees high walk
2nd gear – jog or gallop
3rd gear – run or skip
4th gear – run as fast as you can or hopscotch

Listen out for these instructions:

flat tyre – hop
narrow road – side-step
ice on the road – curvy gallop
round a roundabout – pivot on the spot (Remember to try both legs.)

PHYSICAL PHONICS

To make our phonics more active this week; our Monday and Tuesday sessions will be what we call a 'Noisy Letter Phonics jump' activity.

It is fun & engaging and will support your child in retaining the new sounds that they have learnt over the past couple of weeks.

It is extremely simple to create, requiring just chalk and the ground, yet is a great way to consolidate phoneme-grapheme correspondence in an active way. It’s also a great assessment tool to quickly see which letters they are not so secure on and need to become a target for practise.

GROUP A: Write the sounds we are consolidating this week: m, a, s, d, t, i, n, p, g, c, k, o, g, b

GROUP B: Write the sounds we are consolidating this week: th, ng, sh, ch, qu, nk, x, z

Write more than one of each of these to give your child plenty of practise for jumping.

You can play this in 2 ways. The first way is to jump from letter to letter, noisily shouting out the sound (not the letter name) as they land in it.

For example, jump on the C and shout “ccccc.” You can then change the volume to add to the fun, so the next time they must whisper, or alternatively say it s-l-o-w-l-y, squeaky, scared etc.

If your child can recognise these sounds then ask them to use the chalk to write some words with their focussed sounds in such as:

GROUP A: tin, pin, got, sock, mat, tim, sam, tip etc

GROUP B: chop, shin, zith, thin, this, that, ring, sing, quit etc

Alternatively you could write some red tricky words on the floor and ask them to jump on the ones you call out!

If you create any other alternatives of this game then please share your ideas and I will post them for other parents to use too!

TUESDAY

MATHS

This week as we are focussing on comparing quantities to 10 in Maths so I thought it would be fun to play a hidden numbers game!

All you need is some rice/sand/couscous or anything else that you can find around the house that will cover the bottom of a dish or tray.

If you would like to make you rice colourful then just pop some in a plastic bag, squeeze in some paint, seal the bag and rub the rice in the bag until it is all covered in the paint and then empty onto a piece of foil to dry for a couple of hours.

Depending on your child's ability this activity can be adapted to suit everyone's needs. 

Write a selection of numbers onto a piece of paper 0-10 & then add in some numbers to 20 and beyond if you feel it is appropriate for your child.

Write more than one of each number so that they can uncover the same number when they are looking to develop the language of 'equal'.

Place the paper with the numbers into a large dish or tray and pour the rice or other covering you have found, over the paper to cover the numbers.

Ask your child to use a brush or their hands to uncover a number and tell you what it is.

Then say 'Can you find a number which is fewer?'

'Can you find a number which is more?'

'Can you find 2 numbers that are equal?'

Repeat until the get the hang of the language and are able to distinguish between more/fewer and equal.

If they are struggling to recognise whether it is more/fewer/equal, then get them to use some numicon or objects to count how many each number represents as this way it will help them to visualise what quantity the number represents.

Finally, have fun!!

Display the link below and ask the children how they think this printing pattern has been created.

Explain that they have used celery a type of vegetable to create a flower pattern. Show the children a celery and then cut the bottom section off to reveal a flower head pattern.

Demonstrate how to create a hand print. Then use an array of colours to print one flower head on the top of each finger/thumb print.

MUSIC

Sing or play I'm walking like a robot and ask children to revisit robot movements, e.g. stiff, slow, jerky etc. Provide metallic instruments and soundmakers, and invite children to explore sounds for different parts of the robot's body, e.g.
- quick taps for wobbly eyes;
- scratchy sounds for bending arms;
- clinking sounds for wiggly ears;
- strong, scraping sounds for stiff legs.

Instead of using metallic instruments, you could use everyday soundmakers such as pots, pans and lids, cutlery, sieves and whisks.

THURSDAY

Today we are going to make good use again of our hidden numbers game we created on Tuesday but we are going to add a twist to it.

Depending on your child's ability this activity can be adapted to suit everyone's needs. 

Hide a selection of Numicon pieces or towers of cubes/lego etc so they all represent different quantities 0-10.

Make some towers/pieces equal for example two 5's or two 7's so they can choose 2 pieces which are equal.

You can extend this and put towers in 11-20 if your child is confident enough.

If you have magnectic numbers then add these in too to make it more interesting!

Ask your child to use a brush or their hands to uncover a piece of Numicon/tower and tell you numeral it represents

Then say 'Can you find a piece which is fewer?'

'Can you find a piece which is more?'

'Can you find 2 pieces that are equal?'

Repeat until the get the hang of the language and are able to distinguish between more/fewer and equal.

Once they become confident ask them to find 3 or 4 pieces and order them from the most to the fewest/least.

Finally, have fun!!

RECYCLING

BUG HOTELS!

Display the image below and explain that as part of protecting our planet that we also need to look after the wildlife and creatures that live here.

Explain that we are going to be creating bug hotels that can hand on the tree out of recycled materials.

What insects might live in our bug hotels?

Extract names of different minibeasts:

Ladybirds

Ants

Earwigs

Spiders

Flies

Caterpillars

Butterflies

Discuss which minibeast they would like to live in their hotel & why.

Each child needs a plastic bottle/old mug/old plastic beaker that they can adapt and recycle into their own bug hotel.

Provide the children with paint mixed with PVA glue to ensure it sticks and is waterproof which they can then use to decorate the outside.

Attach a piece of string which can they be tied to the tree branches.

Other recycled items such as moss, sticks, leaves etc can be used to fill their hotel.

For our final session this week I thought everyone would enjoy another sensory Maths activity that I found on an amazing website called 'THE IMAGINATION TREE'

If you want some fantastic learning through play ideas for all areas of learning then access the site through the link above!

First get some balls of home-made play dough with dry spaghetti skewers stuck into them or you could even use pipe cleaners!

Then make some number cards 0-10 or 0-20 if appropriate.

You will need some threading beads or penne pasta that you can thread onto the spaghetti.

Ask you child to roll 2 balls of playdough and stick their pipe clearners or spaghetti into it.

Then ask them to choose 2 number cards off the pile and stick these one into each of their playdough balls.

Ask them to thread the number of beads/pasta onto their spaghetti/pipe cleaner so they can visually compare the 2 quantities.

Then ask: 'Which is more?'

'Which is fewer?'

'Are they equal?'

'How many more is .... than your one which is fewer?'

'How many less is ..... than your one that is more?'

POPPING PIRATES

Game 1

In pairs or threes, take turns to be the popping pirate.

Pirates stand with legs wide apart. (Don’t forget, you can lean against the wall if you wobble too much.)

Your shipmate balances different equipment on your body.

When your shipmate has finished loading you up they shout, “Ship ahoy” and you balance on one leg.

IF you still haven’t wobbled and dropped all the equipment, then try with your eyes closed!

Don’t forget to try on either foot.

Game 2

Arrange lots of equipment on your partner’s head and shoulders as they balance on one leg.

When your teacher shouts “Pirates coming” shake all the equipment off. Swap roles.

FILTER COFFEE PAPER EARTH

Display the coffee filter Earth below and explain that today we are going to make our own planet Earth’s to display on the windows.

Use coffee filter paper and allow the children to colour them in blue and green with felt tips pens (the whole filter must be coloured). Spray them with water on a plate and leave overnight on a paper towel to dry. The pen will run though so make sure the surface is washable. When dry display on the windows and discuss why our Planet is so special.

P.E

This week in P.E we are focussing on the following:

Try these activities:

• March on the spot, lifting your knees high.

• Stand on the spot, drive your arms forwards and backwards, keeping your body still and straight.

• March on the spot and drive your arms at the same time (opposite arm and leg).

• Run on the spot, lifting your knees up.

• Run on the spot, touching your heels to your bottom.

• Stand on the spot, touch your left toe forward and then your right toe. Repeat but this time touch to the side.

• Bounce on 1 leg on the spot and then the other leg.

• Stand on the spot facing north and spin (pivot) on 1 foot to face east, south and west (or 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock). Spin on either foot, forwards and backwards.

• Explore moving forwards, backwards and sideways in different ways.

Explain that this week they are going to be printing with something different. Show the children some cars and trains.  What part of the vehicle can we print with?

Demonstrate that they can roll the tyre treads in the poster paint to develop different patterns.

Children to be given a selection of vehicles and poster paint.

They should explore the different patterns that they can make using the tyre treads. Discuss which ones are thick, thin and why vehicles have different tread thicknesses for different jobs.

MUSIC

Display models of a cow, a sheep and a hen and place them next to a milk bottle, a woolly hat and a boiled egg. As children show an interest in the items, talk about how the animals and objects are linked and what each animal produces.

Play or sing The farmer's on his farm and encourage children to join in when they are ready.

The theme this year is ‘Express Yourself’ and to mark the occasion we are encouraging children to dress up on Friday 5^th February 2021.

They may like to dress up as their favourite book character, football hero or game character for example but the choice is yours!

Help children make a collage using colourful pictures of flowers as you play  Mr Sun in the background.

Sing or play the song again and perform the actions, encouraging children to join in when ready. Talk about the sun and explain that it is the source of light and warmth for plants as well as people.

Provide metallic instruments such as bells, finger cymbals and glockenspiels for children to make bright, warm and sparkling 'sun sounds'. Instead of instruments you could use metallic soundmakers - pots and pans, tin foil, jar lids etc.

Sing or play the song again, inviting children to play their 'sun sounds' to accompany the song.

MILK BOTTLE BIRD FEEDERS

RECYCLING

Display the images below and explain that today we are going to turn some of our plastic milk bottles from the recycling centre into bird feeders for our gardens.

Ask the children what types of birds they have seen feeding in their garden or when they have been playing outside.

Display ‘British Birds’ poster:

Look at the different types of birds they might see using their bird feeders.

Children to use plastic milk bottles to design and make their own bird feeders for the outdoor area.

They can use materials to decorate them and cut 2 sides of the bottle to allow the birds access in and out and leave a small lip for the feed tray at the base.

Then attach string to the bottle neck and hang from the tree with feed in the bottom.

Over the coming days and weeks, the children can track which British birds they see using their feeder.

PHONICS SOUNDS ACTIVITY: PIRATE TREASURE HUNT

Set up a fun phonics sounds pirate treasure hunt using simple, DIY pirate gold coins hidden to make a treasure in a sand tray or even in a large dish/container with flour/rice/sand/couscous etc if you are doing this inside!

As the children have learnt some new sounds over the last couple of weeks we need them to begin to consolidate these so they can retain them for reading and writing indepedently.

Adults write the sounds: c, k, b, u, f, e, l, h, sh on your DIY golden coins which will be the pirates treasure and hide these in your 'sand'.

Then ask the children to use their telescope AKA a kitchen roll or something that represents a telescope (so they feel like they are a real pirate) to identify and find the different sounds that you call out.

If there are too many new sounds in the tray and they are finding it overwhelming then just pop a 2-3 in at a time until they can consistently find these. Once you feel they are ready then begin to add in a couple more until you have the whole set of new sounds listed above. You can keep revisiting this activity over the next few weeks until they are confident with all of the new sounds.

CHALLENGE:

If they are getting on well with finding and recognising their new sounds, then move onto building some of the following cvc words: cub, cesh, shel, lek, kuf, shef, bush, besh, heb, hub, hush etc.

Practise a few pf these today and then return to it again next week to consolidate and reinforce these sounds.

(just use the sounds you have on your coins as they do not need to be real words as they need to know monster aka nonsense words too)

Remember to put the sounds on 3 fingers and sound out the word'sticking'each sound to your fingers a few times, then as them 'so what sound do we need to look for first?' Repeat with the second sound and so on until they have built the whole word.

Then sound out the word on the coins and blend it together to read it!
