Year 1 - Miss Richards

Welcome to the Robin's Class 

 

 

Please check the class page regularly to see what your child has been learning in year 1. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.  

 

In the Robins class there is myself (Miss Richards), Mrs Ferguson, Miss Roper and Miss Blackford who will be supporting your child's learning. 

 

Important information 

  • Monday: Spelling day- Please ensure your child practices their spellings at home and brings their completed spelling folder ready for their spelling test every Monday.
  • Thursday: Inside PE (Please come to school in your PE kit).
  • Friday: Outside PE (Please come to school in your PE kit). 
  • Every day: Please ensure your child brings their reading book and reading record to school every day and this is stored in their homework folder to protect the books.

Our Learning Journey 

 

Tuesday 11th November- In science we discussed different types of weather. We focussed on the wind where the children decorated a kite. We then went outside on the windy playground and flew our kites, blew bubbles and bounced balloons to a partner.

Tuesday 11th November- A visit from Pudsey bear

Monday 10th November- This afternoon the children created a house they would like to live in and made it out of junk modelling materials. They also used the blocks on the carpet to build a village with houses and shops.

Friday 7th November 2025.- In PE we played a game called ‘ants in our pants’. The children threw their ball (ant) through the hoop (pants). The children had great fun playing this game while learning how to throw and catch balls.

Thursday 6th November- DinoStar workshop. The children saw some real life fossils and got the chance to touch them. Next we all made wax rubbings of fossils and made our own fossil out of clay.

Thursday 5th November- The children are all ready for the Halloween disco.

Wednesday 5th November- In computing the children learnt how to log onto the computers and explored the website ‘sketch pad’.

Monday 3rd November- We started our topic of “The Local Area” in geography where we discussed what is in our home town and different things we can see from our homes. The children then draw a picture of their house and discussed how it is different to the person sat next to them.

Tuesday 21st and 22nd Wednesday October- The children consolidated their knowledge of numbers to 20 by playing some different games.

Tuesday 21st October- The children discussed seasonal changes and how this affects our clothing choices.

Monday 20th October- Today in computing the children learnt the word ‘online’ and ‘offline’. They played 6 different activities, some were online and some were offline. I asked the children which were their favourite and why. We then discussed the importance of having time offline and away from screens.

Thursday 16th October- In science this afternoon the children looked at winter. We discussed how the weather changes and there are less hours of sunlight. The children thought of some activites and traditions that happen during winter and they disucssed what they would wear to keep themselves warm.

Wednesday 15th October- The children have learnt the symbols +, - and =. They have been starting to use these in their own calculations with a partner.

Tuesday 14th October- The children learnt about hibernation in science and made a hedgehog house in the outside area.

Friday 10th October- Hello yellow day

Tuesday 7th October- The children made autumnal pictures in science.

Thursday 2nd October- Wacky hair day

Term 1- During the Autumn term some children have attended the year 1 funky fingers after school club. The club has helped develop the children’s fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Wednesday 1st October- In art today the children were learning how to sketch a flower, they will be using their flower as a template to create their collage next week. In readiness for next week, the children completed some fine motor activities including pencil control, scissors skills and cutting.

Wednesday 1st October- The library van came to visit Hawthorn Tree School today, the children looked at the different stories available and chose a book to borrow for the term. We will keep these in school so the children can read and share with their friends.

Tuesday 30th September- In science the children learnt how to stay safe in the sun. The children had some great ideas including wearing suncream so they don’t get burnt, wearing shorts and a T-shirt to stay cool, a hat to protect their face and neck and also to drink lots of water to stay hydrated.

Thursday 25th September- Today in PE we were completing some balancing games.

Wednesday 24th September- The children used some different techniques to add texture to their art work. They used cotton buds and wooden sticks to add spirals, twirls and zigzags.

Monday 22nd September- The children became authors today in English and wrote their own version of the story ‘Field trip to the moon’. The children produced some amazing work and should be very pleased with their first piece of portfolio writing in year 1.

Wednesday 17th September- Thank you to all the parents who attended our parent workshop. It was lovely to see the children so engaged in all the activities. It gave the children an opportunity to be creative and work collaboratively with others.

Wednesday 17th September- The children have enjoyed our space ‘WOW’ day. We had a visit from the planetarium where they learnt about the different planets, stars and information on a British astronaut called Tim Peake

Monday 15th September- This week we will be reading the story ‘field trip to the moon’. Today we looked at the story without reading any words! We discussed how pictures can be used to tell a story and we can see how the characters might be feeling. The children then independently sequenced the story by considering what happened at the start, middle and end.

Friday 12th September- We had our second lesson on the “look, run, avoid” topic in PE. The children were working with their partner to try and grab each others tail. The children then worked in three teams pretending to be lions trying to retrieve the “food” from the hyenas home.

Thursday 11th September- In RE the children made dolly peg Vicars

Wednesday 10th September- In art this term we are looking at the author and illustrator Eric Carle. The children are familiar with some of his books including ‘The very hungry caterpillar’ and ‘Brown bear Brown bear what can you see’. The children painted a sky using the brush strokes they learn last week and added clouds using sponges.

Tuesday 9th September- Well done to the children who completed their summer homework :)

Monday 8th September- In history this term we will be learning about our local area. The children spotted Boston Stump on the playground and tried drawing and building it.

Friday 5th September- outside learning in maths

Thursday 4th September- We have started our first unit at RE where we are discussing different religions but focusing on Christianity. The children looked at different churches and discussed their features. They then created their own stained glass window to decorate our classroom.

Thursday 4th September- The children loved their first PE lesson, they moved around the hall like different animals. We also got the parachute out and played fruit salad, the weather game and popcorn.

Wednesday 3rd September- After a busy first day the children had some time outside to play on the field.

Wednesday 3rd September- We started our first topic on art where the children were learning different brush strokes and patterns.

Wednesday 3rd September- This afternoon the children completed some different Robin based activities to welcome them into the Robin class. They learnt how to draw a Robin, coloured some pictures, made a felt Robin which they will get to hang on the tree in our reading corner.

Wednesday 3rd September- In maths we reviewed the numbers 0-10 and tried writing them in the children’s new exercise books. They also played some counting, sorting and ordering games with their friends.
