  • Eye tests for children Although serious vision problems during childhood are rare, routine eye checks are offered to newborn babies and young children to identify any problems early on. Free NHS sight tests are also available at opticians for children under 16 and for young people under 19 in full-time education.
  • Children’s eye health Being able to see clearly is important for a child’s overall development and helps them to discover and learn about their world. Most children have excellent sight and do not need to wear glasses, but if there are problems and they are not picked up at an early age, your child may have permanently reduced vision in one or both eyes.
