Operation Encompass
At Hawthorn Tree Primary School, we are committed to supporting the wellbeing and safety of all our pupils. We are proud to be part of Operation Encompass, a national initiative that helps schools provide timely support to children who may have been affected by domestic abuse.
What is Operation Encompass?
Operation Encompass is a partnership between schools and the police. When police attend an incident of domestic abuse where a child is involved, present, or connected to the household, the school is informed before the start of the next school day. This enables appropriate support to be put in place as quickly as possible.
How does it work?
The information is shared confidentially with the school's Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or another trained Key Adult. The information is used solely to ensure that any child affected receives the care, understanding and support they may need during the school day.
Why is it important?
Children who experience domestic abuse can be affected emotionally, socially and academically. By receiving information promptly, school staff can:
- Provide additional emotional support.
- Offer a safe and trusted adult to talk to.
- Monitor wellbeing and welfare.
- Make reasonable adjustments where needed.
- Respond quickly to any concerns.
Confidentiality
All information shared through Operation Encompass is treated in the strictest confidence and is managed in accordance with safeguarding procedures and data protection requirements. Information is only shared with staff who need to know in order to support the child effectively.
Supporting Our Pupils
At Hawthorn Tree, we believe every child should feel welcomed, known, included, supported and connected. Operation Encompass is an important part of our safeguarding and wellbeing provision, helping us ensure that children receive the right support at the right time.
