Parents English Workshop - 19th October

2015-2016 Academic Year

Year 6 will be a busy year for the children. Between 9-13th May 2016, SATs will take place. Hopefully, there will be some fun times alongside the learning.

In Literacy the children will be looking at China, this also links to the Geography and History. This will involve looking at the story and characters from the story Mulan, plus the wider world and travel. Children will be encouraged to use their knowledge and their imaginations to enhance their writing in all foundation subjects. The children will also be looking at The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. From this they will be completing character studies, role play and chapter summaries.

In Maths the children will cover:

  • Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 1000 and 10000
  • Derive quick multiplication and division facts
  • Finding common multiples
  • Properties of shapes, including 2-D and 3-D shapes
  • Frequency tables
  • Interpreting data
  • Ratio & proportion
  • Algebra
  • Mental Strategies

In Science, the children will be focusing on Animals including human's diet and lifestyle

In ICT, the children will be using PowerPoint, they will learn how to use computer networks including the internet and also coding. They will also be App planning.

In Art, the focus will be collaging based on a China theme.

In DT, the children will be making cam based construction toys.

Year 6 will be learning French throughout the year. The lessons will include: greetings, colours, songs, looking at the French way of life and ordering French food.

Indoor PE will be on Wednesday. The children will be doing dance influenced by 'Gangs' - they will watch clips from West Side Story and Teen Beach Movie to base their moves on. Outdoor PE will be on Friday. Please ensure the correct kit is in school and if possible all jewellery is removed. Shorts and t-shirts should be worn for indoor PE and tracksuits may be worn for outdoor PE.

In RE, the children will be learning Buddhism. They will be considering suffering and looking at the teachings of Buddha and how Buddhists follow his teaching.

Each week the children will be given spelling and timetable tests. Plus weekly homework in the form of 10 minute tests. The test books will be sent home each week and at times the children will need support on these books. The 10 minute tests will be in Grammar and Reading. There is an expectation that the children will read twice a week to an adult and this reading is recorded in their record book with a signature and comment. Reading is the most important tool the children need and if you could take time to hear them read and discuss what they have read, it would be greatly appreciated.

This is the busiest term! But hopefully when we get to PGL we will all be able to enjoy our time away. More details will follow in the form of two letters, one outlining the run up to SATs and the other with a kit list for PGL.

Coming up -

Data Project - over the Easter Holiday's the children will have a data project to complete.

World War Two is our topic for Terms 5 and 6 - so get talking to Great Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles to find out what they did during the war.

Mrs Smith's class have recently learnt how to play a Frere Jacques version of the song 'Superheroes' on the ukulele during their music sessions. Click the link below to hear them perform. They have also learnt 'Happy Birthday', watch the video below.
